If some of the keys on your keyboard are typing numbers instead of letters, check to make sure Num Lock is not on. This seems obvious, but it’s a common occurrence on laptop and notebook computers, and it’s not as easy as just pressing a NumLock key to turn it off.
On some Gateway notebook computers, for example, you toggle the NumLock function by pressing Fn+. In other words, you hold down the Fn key (lower left of the keyboard) while pressing and releasing the Scroll key. Toggle means the keystroke turns the function on it it’s off or off it it’s on.
On some Packard-Bell keyboards, you hold down the Fn key while pressing the Ins key.
The important thing to remember is that if your keyboard is typing numbers when you’re trying to type letters, it’s likely that Num Lock is on. Your next step is to read the manual or check the manufacturer’s website for instructions on how to toggle Num Lock off.
mine is typing numbers and letters and it is a neatbook and i tryed all above and nothing working….. help!!!! 7this is wha7t i7t 7types like.. 7t 5r 9u -o
Hi, Mikayla–
Try Fn+Shift+Scroll or Fn+Shift+Numlock. What’s the manufacturer and model of your computer?
thanks guys the scroll key worked
I have tried several suggestions, but Joe’s suggestion worked! I have an Asus laptop if that will help anyone else. Thank you so much!
Thanks! This ended 3 frustrating days trying to resolve the problem.
I’m having this problem, except mines a bit different. My keyboard types the numbers in order no matter what keys I press. For example if I type iamfrustrated it turns into 0123456789012. It only happens on Pandora and when I am trying to play games. None of the things I’ve found on the internet help. P.S. I have a Toshiba Qosmio.
I am having the same problem as Brandon. I am using a desktop, not a laptop. When I go on MSNBC for instance sukoku types random numbers. It is also happening on the crossword.
Same problem as Brandon and Marsha, only happens sometimes on the internet, its usually fixed if i restart the computer, but i’ve been trying to play oblivion on my computer and it does no matter what i do. Anybody figure it out?
^^^ i have a Lenovo laptop
it seems to be a recurring phenomina with many keyboards. My Keyboard is made from Hewlett Packard and I can’t play any games whatsoever. When I try to remap it does that annoying replacement- 0 -9 scrolling of numbers. I’ve tried the Fn thing (which I don’t know why I even have it on a desktop keyboard), I’ve tried just pressing random letters and numbers, all the F keys. Any special keys as well. I notice that all of the hype seems to be recently. As with mine. I hope someone can find the answer to this riddle. I just bought a new Radeon 6750 to play highend games, and can’t play due to the darned keyboard acting up,.
Same here to all of the above. I play a private server, and 0-9 numbers scroll. Im on a desktop to! So frustrating. And my keyboard doesent even have a fn button!
thanks
solve my problem.
Same thing as others. Only incrementing numbers from 0-through-9, and only when I’m playing a game. Odd thing, when I exit the active game window, but stay within the program, I can type in a public chat window and it works fine. But when I go into the controller mapping screens or into the actual gameplay…I get nothing but 0-through-9. The only key that works for me is the Keypad 0, and that’s only when I turn number lock OFF. Crazy. This happened the day of a fresh Windows installation. I’ve tried multiple KBs, both PS2 and USB, multiple video drivers as well…nothing fixes it. Waiting patiently for a solution. Either some update killed it, or a virus.
After some searching, it seems a program called GaurdedID was causing the issue on my PC. I just did a fresh Windows install when this happened, I also tried an ISP provided anit-virus that I never had tried before. It appears that this GaurdedID was installed in my system and running at startup. I’m sure you could force it to not run, I just uninstalled the darn thing. Now my keyboard works perfectly.
hey thanks Giovanni got it working again. hey guys just delete the GUARDEDID in the add or remove programs restart your pc and ready to go.
If anyone has comcast constent guard on their computer uninstall it. It has a keystroke block that causes this problem on games and certain other apps. Problem solved!
I was getting frustrated. Finally, uninstalled constant guard and it worked. My problem got fixed. Thanks a lot.
I had the same problem as many above. It was getting so bad, I couldn’t even play Portal, because my character wouldn’t stop moving after I pressed the w key…I uninstalled Constant Guard and it finally worked! Thanks so much.
i was having the same problem, no matter what key i hit all i got was either a symbol or numbers 0-1. just uninstalled guardedID and works great! thanks
i meant 0-9
thx so much for the info it helped alot i was starting to freak out becuz i play world of warcraft and the WASD buttons are a big part of how i play the info was right on thx
Hi. The above is not helping me either. My issue is that at random, every key I type is changed into 0-9 in order. As an example if i were to type, “Spunkymonkey” it would appear as “1234567890123” The first key is always a “1” then no matter what the next keys i press are it will be 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. And the weird thing is it will randomly go back to normal then back to this odd behavior. And i make sure not to press any odd keys. My computer is Windows 7.
my keyboard does this with any program unless i run it as an admin, even then it still messes up i am using firefox cause i can run this as an admin, but i can not run ie as one so i can’t use that 🙁 my comp is a windows 7
my 1440 inspiron laptop does not have a num key, or a scroll key and I cannot fix the problem with typing numbers instead of letters. this is what it looks like when I type hello h6llo
please help!
u can also try Fn+ f11
I have discovered that certain antivirus protection suites will cuase this. The comcast Constant Guard will cause your letters to type ascending numbers in most secondary programs. Remove the encrypting program and the problem will go away.
Thank you mystical computer ninjas, uninstalled Comcast Constant Guard and it worked!
I am running Windows XP on one computer and also resently experienced Giovanni problem and then curded it also like Giovanni, with the deleting of GuardedID.

Ty defiants for the info, Comcast Protection Suite was causing this in a game and sometimes in my browser.
if i uninstall constant guard my parents will freak any ideas?
Guys it says i need permission to uninstall the stupid thing and when i stop the process it just comes right back and this has been going on for 5 weeks all of my summer i cant play any of my games please help!
Hello people i recently bought and installed a new hard drive, and downloaded some games. But when i tried to walk, i didnt work. i figured out that my keyboard is typing numbers instead.
I tried the NumLk thing but it didnt work. my comeputer is a gateway. please help.
thanks
I’m the same problem with ascending numbers being typed instead of letters. This makes it difficult to play downloaded games and makes internet games virtually unplayable; I can click a button about one time before any letter keys stop responding. When playing minecraft hitting letters will just scroll through the numbers. I have Windows 7 but don’t have the “GuardedID” program that others have listed. I do have something called an “IDVault” but whenever I choose to end that process it simply comes back, so I don’t know how to solve this issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Comcast Protection Suite was causing issue. I left Norton installed but uninstalled Constant Guard then rebooted network. Network work fine now.
thank god almiighty this worked. I am about to go on a trip and i needed my computer and number lock was on. Thank you so much.
Warren Paarham – you’re a genius…I looked and looked and mine too was because of Constant Guard. Thanks so much!!!
I am having the same problem, but I do not have an FN key on my keyboard. This is a desktop, but assembled my self and not a brand name.
What key replaces FN ot togggle between funtions? Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot Joe!
i had the same problem with gaming online and the 0-9 consecutive numbers no matter what key i pressed. i had to close google chrome open mozilla, like magic it was fine in both browsers.
Thanks so much guys! It was constant guard messing up all my games! Constant guard has the option to disable the anti-keylogging feature which causes the problem. So if you’re like me and have parents that’ll freak out if you remove Constant guard.. just disable the feature and presto! Problem solved! 🙂
earlier today i was cleaning my keyboard and it just started to type funny and when i type it 0;looks 0;like8 0this/. ive tried all above and nothing works. i have an asus laptop. please help
O COMANDO É ESSE AQUI ABAIXO:
“fn + Shift + ScrLK + NumLk”
it solves my problem. thanks guys! this really helps.. woohooo!! 🙂
when i type some letters on my desktop computer’s keyboard it also includes numbers.. like 7 for letter ‘O’, 1 for ‘L’,( vice versa)and ¥ for the spacebar.. that is if the numlock is on.. if its off, after typing each letter, it would go back to the first line and i have to place back the cursor to the end to continue typing..
what can i do?
This solved my issue! You guys rock!
another thing to check make sure u dont have caps on, many computers will type random numbers for letters when u have caps lock plus the num lock on. soooo if any of those things didnt work try pressing the (caps lock) than hold fn+shift+num loc. if that doesnt work try shift+fn+scr lck.
and most of the time if ur computer is runnign slow try checking out how much ram u have. if u dont have much ram lefted ur computer will appear to run slow. so update ur ram, and registry scan, and disk defrags. gl have fun.
Thanks Joe it worked
I have a problem like this, but its much more severe than just num lock. sometimes, my keyboard goes into a state where whenever i press a key on my keyboard, except for esc and space, it types increasingly larger numbers. For example, q-w-e-r-t-y=123456 but tttttt=123456 as well, so however many times i press a key, the number it displays increases. this is very severe as I dont know how do stop it and it extremely limits my ability to use my laptop.
try clr+alt+num lk/scrlk
